The sporting calendar frequently boasts grand spectacles, but few resonate quite as profoundly as the scenes witnessed in the shadow of the National Parliament on Monday.
There, the Shaheed Farhan Faiyaz Playground transformed into a bustling theatre of dreams, playing host to a truly inspiring, day-long national sports competition for children with special needs.
Athletes representing all eight divisions of the country converged on the capital, having successfully navigated their way through fiercely contested district and divisional qualifiers.
From the morning whistle, these exceptional young talents threw themselves into a variety of disciplines—including track events, softball, and football—demonstrating both tremendous skill and infectious enthusiasm.
For many of these competitors, this annual fixture is the most highly anticipated day on the sporting calendar.
Beyond the thrill of the events themselves, it serves as a vital social platform, allowing the children to forge new friendships and celebrate the occasion entirely on their own terms.
Organised by the Directorate of Sports under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the annual initiative serves a profound purpose.
The organisers aim to inspire these young athletes, instil in them the same competitive drive enjoyed by their mainstream peers, and provide a national stage for their athletic talents to truly flourish.
The State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, graced the event as the chief guest, officially inaugurating the competition by releasing a colourful array of balloons and festoons into the sky.
He was joined by the Director of the Directorate of Sports, Mahbubur Rahman, who attended as a special guest.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the State Minister offered an encouraging glimpse into the future, announcing that the government is formulating comprehensive, dedicated plans to further support and develop sporting infrastructure for children with special needs from next year onwards.
