Former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad is set to transition into a mentoring role with the national Under-19 team, a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) source confirmed to Daily Sun on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old, who retired from international cricket across all formats over the last few years, has remained a fixture in the domestic circuit and is currently representing Prime Bank Cricket Club in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.
According to sources, the BCB plans to involve the veteran batter as a mentor for the youth side, with the possibility of a long-term attachment through the 2028 Under-19 World Cup cycle.
The role is expected to be hands-on, potentially involving travel on overseas tours in addition to supervising youth camps at home.
Mahmudullah has long been tipped for a coaching or mentoring transition.
During Aminul Islam Bulbul’s tenure on the board, discussions were reportedly held regarding his potential involvement as a specialist batting consultant.
One of the nation’s most decorated cricketers, Mahmudullah retired from Test cricket in 2021 before playing his final T20 International during the tour of India in 2024.
He eventually brought the curtain down on his international career by stepping away from One-Day Internationals following the 2025 Champions Trophy.
With more than 11,000 international runs to his name, Mahmudullah’s wealth of experience is viewed as a vital asset for the next generation of Bangladesh cricketers.
