In a significant turn of events for Bangladeshi football, Fortis FC have secured their AFC club license, clearing the path for their debut in the AFC Challenge League.
The country's two giants, Bashundhara Kings and Abahani Limited, failed to obtain the license this year due to ongoing FIFA transfer bans.
Consequently, despite holding the top two spots in the league table, neither side will be eligible to participate in the upcoming AFC season.
This opening has paved the way for Fortis, who have virtually secured third place in the league.
While an official announcement is still pending, all signs indicate that Fortis is headed for their first-ever appearance in an Asian club competition.
Only two clubs from Bangladesh successfully obtained the AFC club license this year - Fortis and Bangladesh Police FC.
Fortis were title contenders during the first phase of the league, though they lost some momentum in the second half.
With two matches remaining, Fortis trail league leaders Bashundhara Kings by four points and second-placed Abahani by three points.
While clinching the championship is a steep mountain to climb, the runner-up spot is still within reach for Fortis.
Regardless, securing third place has effectively opened the door to the Challenge League.
The final decision on whether the team will participate now rests with the club management, who must weigh the logistical and competitive demands of representing Bangladesh on the continental stage.
