The title race in the Bangladesh Football League (BFL) has been blown wide open following an evening of unprecedented chaos and controversy at the Bashundhara Kings Arena.

In a fixture that defied belief, the encounter between league leaders Bashundhara Kings and Police FC lasted a staggering 168 minutes, marred by a 75-minute standoff over a substitution dispute that threatened to derail the competition.

The drama ignited in the 63rd minute with the score locked at 1-1.

Police FC’s Paulo De Azevedo, who had earlier cancelled out Dorielton Gomes’ 35th-minute opener, received a second yellow card for a foul on Faysal Ahmed Fahim.

The ensuing dismissal sparked a procedural revolt from the Police coaching staff; they attempted to substitute a local player for a foreign one, a move strictly prohibited by Article 27.1 of the league’s bylaws, which mandates like-for-like nationality in such tactical changes.

Despite the clarity of the regulations, a protracted and often surreal confrontation involving the referee, match commissioner, and Police officials saw play halted for over an hour.

While players remained stranded on the pitch, the authorities eventually prevailed, forcing Police FC to adhere to the rules.

When play finally resumed, an extraordinary 27 minutes of stoppage time was added.

However, the Kings failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage, eventually being reduced to 10 men themselves when Rimon Hossain saw red.

The resulting 1-1 draw is a hammer blow for the defending champions.

While the Kings remain atop the table with 34 points from 16 matches, their lead has evaporated to a single point.

Abahani Limited, resurgent under Maruful Haque with a perfect record in the second phase, moved to 33 points after a clinical 2-0 victory over PWD in Gazipur.

This setting ensures a winner-takes-all atmosphere for next Friday’s titanic clash in Comilla.

With only two rounds remaining, the confrontation between Kings and Abahani will almost certainly decide the destination of the trophy.

Meanwhile, Fortis maintained their outside pressure on the top two with a ruthless 7-1 demolition of Fakirerpool, headlined by a four-goal haul from Pa Omar Babou, leaving them in third place on 31 points.

What was once a procession for the Kings has now transformed into one of the most volatile and compelling title races in recent memory.
