Leicester City’s Bangladesh midfielder Hamza Choudhury faced a harrowing ordeal on Saturday as he was subjected to racial abuse from the stands.
In a controversial turn of events, the 28-year old was shown a yellow card for protesting the insults directed at him.
The incident occurred during the Foxes’ Championship clash against Portsmouth at Fratton Park. With the threat of relegation looming, Hamza’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat, but the match was overshadowed by the 71st-minute incident involving the crowd.
Returning from injury, Hamza was named in the starting line-up by manager Gary Rowett. After a barren first half, Portsmouth took the lead in the 63rd minute through an Ebou Adams goal. Seeking an equaliser, Rowett opted to substitute Hamza for Jordan James in the 71st minute.
According to reports from the Daily Express, as Hamza was making his way off the pitch, he was targeted with racial slurs by the Pompey supporters. Visibly upset, the all-action midfielder engaged in a heated verbal exchange with the gallery before heading toward the dugout.
As the situation escalated, the match referee intervened. Hamza continued to express his anger through gestures while explaining the abuse to the official. However, instead of addressing the provocation, the referee brandished a yellow card to the substituted player.
The decision further infuriated Hamza, who was seen pushing away a member of the coaching staff in frustration before slumping into his seat on the bench, his face etched with anger and resentment.
The fallout on the pitch mirrored the grim reality for Leicester in the league standings. The 1-0 loss leaves the club in a precarious position in the second tier of English football.
The Foxes are currently 23rd in the 24-team table with 41 points from 43 matches.
With only three matches remaining, Leicester must win their upcoming fixtures and hope for favourable results from other teams to avoid the drop to the third tier.
The club’s fate could be sealed as early as Tuesday night; if Leicester lose their next match against Hull City, their relegation to League One will be mathematically confirmed.
