Bangladesh are aiming to fast-track construction of a new international stadium in Purbachal with an eye on hosting the 2027 Asia Cup and the 2031 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, officials said on Saturday.

The proposed venue, one of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) flagship infrastructure projects, has been under discussion for years but has yet to move beyond initial groundwork.

Following a site inspection, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque said that authorities are now working towards concrete timelines linked to upcoming global events.

“We have discussed the matter with the BCB president, the ministry secretary and other senior officials. We are working together,” Aminul told reporters.

“We hope to begin the initial phase of work keeping the 2027 Asia Cup and the 2031 World Cup in mind, where Bangladesh has the opportunity to be a co-host.”

He added that the government would provide necessary support to ensure the project progresses without further delays or complications.

The Purbachal stadium, originally planned as a cricket-specific venue, is now being reconsidered as a multi-purpose sports complex.

BCB president Tamim Iqbal, who accompanied Aminul during the visit, stated that design revisions would be made where required, but stressed that starting construction was the priority.

“Necessary changes will be made quickly. The most important thing is to start the work,” Tamim said. “There have been discussions before, but work did not begin. This time, there is clear direction from the honourable State Minister to move forward promptly.”

Tamim also indicated that the board would review the existing design and consult stakeholders, including the National Sports Council, given the scale of investment required.

While some preliminary work, including preparation of wickets, has been completed at the site, no major structural development has taken place so far.
