The sudden dismissal of Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited's head coach, Alfaz Ahmed, has sparked a wave of internal discord, with the club's captain pointing the finger squarely at the management over unpaid wages and a subpar squad.
Despite leading the traditional heavyweights to recent successes, Alfaz was relieved of his duties following a string of poor league performances, raising questions about whether he was unfairly used as a scapegoat.
Captain Mehedi Hasan Mithu expressed shock at the decision, revealing that the squad was completely unaware.
"We trained with him in the afternoon and only found out in the evening that he was no longer at the club," Mithu stated.
While acknowledging that managers routinely face the sack for poor results, the defender emphatically defended his former boss.
Mithu highlighted severe off-pitch issues, noting that players have not been paid for five months.
"I won't blame the coach; the maximum fault lies with the management because they haven't paid us on time," he noted.
He further revealed that the players had previously gone on strike over unpaid salaries and only returned to the pitch due to the personal pleas of the coach and manager.
Mithu also pointed out that the current squad was simply not built to mount a championship challenge, praising Alfaz’s previous achievements, which include securing two major trophies.
In contrast, team leader Amirul Islam Babu defended the board's decision, citing the global footballing norm where managers bear the brunt of poor results.
"We haven't done any injustice," Babu insisted, attributing the team's struggles to inadequate and absent foreign recruits.
He confirmed that Abdul Kayum Sentu will take charge for the remaining six fixtures.
Dispelling any relegation fears, Babu expressed absolute confidence that Mohammedan will secure a comfortable league position within the next three matches.
