Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Barkat Ullah Bulu has been elected president of Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited after the club’s much-anticipated election ultimately ended without a contest, with the full 17-member board of directors being formed unopposed.

Bulu’s path to the presidency had been cleared earlier when fellow BNP leader and former Member of Parliament Zainul Abdin Farroque and former director Sajed AA Adel withdrew their nominations for the top post, paving the way for him to assume leadership of the historic black-and-white club without facing a vote.

Attention then shifted to the race for the remaining 16 director positions, with supporters of Mohammedan and followers of the country’s sporting arena closely monitoring developments ahead of the election scheduled for 9 March. The prospect of a keen contest had triggered widespread speculation around the Motijheel club circle, as 28 candidates remained in the fray following the deadline for withdrawal of nominations.

However, the anticipated battle also faded at the final stage.

In a press release issued on Friday night and signed by election commissioner Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, it was confirmed that voting would no longer be required as all posts had been filled unopposed. Twelve candidates withdrew their nominations at the last moment, leaving exactly 16 contenders for the director posts, who were subsequently declared elected without contest alongside the president.

As a result, Bulu will lead a 17-member board that includes directors Lokman Hossain, Mahbub Anam, Mostafa Kamal, Mostakur Rahman, Masuduzzaman, Enayet Hossain Siraj, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Abul Kalam, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Zahir Ahmed, MA Salam, Nilofar Chowdhury Moni, Adel, Syed Sabbir Bin Rumman, Mahmud Hasan Khan and Zakir Hossain Chowdhury.

The development brings an end to days of intense speculation surrounding the leadership of one of the country’s most traditional and widely supported sporting institutions.

What once appeared set for a competitive election has instead culminated in a consensus-driven board formation, ushering in a new chapter at the Motijheel-based club under Bulu’s leadership.
