Bangladesh Under-19s face a high-stakes, must-win encounter against England in the Super Six stage of the ICC Men’s U-19 World Cup Monday, with their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
The junior Tigers finished third in Group
B, carrying forward just a single point into the Super Sixes after their
crucial fixture against New Zealand was abandoned due to rain.
Under the tournament's carry-over system,
their earlier defeat to India yielded no points, while their convincing victory
over the USA was discounted for this stage as the Americans failed to progress
beyond the group rounds.
Currently sitting in the fourth place in
Super Six Group 2, Bangladesh face a steep uphill battle. India and England
lead the pack with four points apiece, having carried over perfect records
against their fellow qualifiers. This makes Monday’s clash in Bulawayo an
absolute "do-or-die" fixture for the young Tigers if they are to
remain in contention for a semi-final berth.
Bangladesh have two matches remaining in
this phase: Monday’s showdown with England, followed by a final group fixture
against Zimbabwe. Given the standings, anything less than a victory Monday
would effectively signal the end of their World Cup campaign.
The match is being held at the Queens
Sports Club in Bulawayo and is scheduled to get underway at 1:30 PM BST (3:30
PM local time).
