Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain has found an unlikely but influential ally in English wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings, whose guidance and belief have helped him found success in franchise leagues around the world.

The two struck up a close friendship during the Pakistan Super League, where Billings was struck not only by Rishad’s skills but also by his attitude.

“He’s an exceptional bowler,” Billings told Daily Sun in an exclusive interview. “I really think he is one of the best bowlers around. He’s such a humble guy, he works hard, and he’s always got a smile on his face.”

Rishad’s ability to succeed in demanding conditions — from Pakistan’s flat wickets to Australia’s fast, unforgiving surfaces — has particularly impressed the former England international.

“Bowling spin in Pakistan and Australia are two tough places to bowl a lot of the time, and he’s been exceptional,” Billings said. “He’ll only keep on rising. He’s got a very, very bright future.”

So strong is Billings’ belief in the Bangladeshi leg-spinner that he has even tried to lure him to England’s county circuit.

“I’ve been trying to get him to Kent to play as well,” he revealed, a nod to the historic club where Billings has spent most of his career and which has a long tradition of producing top-class wicketkeepers and cricketers.

Beyond talent, Billings sees Rishad as a rare student of the game — someone who listens, adapts and absorbs information.

Rishad has credited Billings as his biggest motivator during difficult moments in the PSL, something the Englishman says comes naturally from his dual role as captain and wicketkeeper.

“Keeping wicket makes it a lot easier for me to give him feedback and tell him what I’m seeing with the conditions and how people are playing. As a wicketkeeper you get a sense of how the batter is trying to play,” he said.

“I try to encourage him to keep on trying to take wickets, but at different times to be defensive. Because sometimes, especially on flat wickets, bowling defensively can actually be very attacking, because people are trying to come at you,” he added.

For Billings, Rishad’s range of skills sets him apart. “He’s got so many different skills. He’s fantastic,” he said. “He’s an absolute legend.”
