A clinical exhibition of pace bowling from Chris Woakes and Khaled Ahmed left Rangpur Riders reeling in the Bashundhara Cement Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Eliminator as they were restricted to a modest 111/9 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
Opting to field first, Sylhet enjoyed immediate success on a surface that offered genuine assistance to the seamers.
The tone was set early by the veteran Woakes, whose immaculate control accounted for the scalp of Dawid Malan for just four.
However, it was Khaled who proved to be the chief destroyer; his fiery four-over spell yielded remarkable figures of 4 for 14, dismantling the Riders' top- and middle-order with relentless accuracy.
The Riders’ innings never gained momentum, punctuated by the sharp work of wicket-keeper Parvez Hossain Emon.
Emon was a standout behind the stumps, claiming four dismissals—all caught—to ensure the pressure remained firmly on the batting side. His victims included the dangerous trio of Malan, Towhid Hridoy, and the Rangpur captain Litton Das.
A brief counter-attack from Mahmudullah (33) and Khushdil Shah (30) provided some respectability to the score, but Nasum Ahmed’s two wickets in the middle overs ensured there was no late flourish.
Rangpur’s struggle was underscored by a dismal powerplay that saw them limp to 29/3, a deficit they never truly recovered from.
