Abhigyan Kundu produced a breathtaking unbeaten double-century to lead India Under-19s to a massive 315-run victory over Malaysia in their Under-19 Asia Cup Group A match in Dubai on Monday.
Walking in at No. 5 in the 11th over, the wicketkeeper-batter batted through the remainder of the innings to compile a superb 209 not out from 125 balls, steering India to a formidable total of 408 for 7.
Kundu’s innings was the cornerstone of India’s dominance after Vaibhav Suryavanshi provided early momentum with a rapid 50 off 26 balls. Kundu then forged a decisive 209-run fourth-wicket partnership with Vedant Trivedi, who scored 90 from 106 deliveries, a stand that stretched from the 11th to the 41st over.
When Trivedi was dismissed, Kundu had already reached 128 from 92 balls. He then accelerated sharply in the final ten overs, smashing 81 runs off the last 33 deliveries to push India beyond the 400-run mark. Suryavanshi (50) and Trivedi were among the other key contributors, while Muhammad Akram stood out for Malaysia with 5 for 89 from his ten overs.
Despite Kundu’s remarkable effort, the match does not carry official youth ODI status. As a result, South Africa’s Jorich Van Schalkwyk, who scored 215 off 153 balls against Zimbabwe earlier this year in Harare, remains the only batter with an officially recognised youth ODI double-century. Bangladesh international Soumya Sarkar had previously struck 209 off 135 balls against Qatar in 2012, but that fixture also lacked official youth ODI status.
In reply, Malaysia were dismissed for just 93, with medium pacer Deepesh Devendran tearing through the batting line-up to claim 5 for 22. Malaysia’s chase faltered early as openers Azib Wajdi and Mohammad Hairil were both dismissed for ducks.
Deepesh struck in each of his first five overs, reducing Malaysia to 38 for 7 and effectively ending the contest. Hamza Panggi and Jaashwin Krishnamurthi offered brief resistance with a 36-run tenth-wicket partnership, but India soon wrapped up the innings.
India now sit comfortably at the top of Group A, having earlier defeated UAE and Pakistan. Malaysia remain at the bottom of the group after suffering defeats against the same opponents.
