Hobart Hurricanes secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over Sydney Thunder in the third match of the Big Bash League on Tuesday, with Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain playing a key role through a disciplined bowling performance on his BBL debut.
Batting first, Sydney Thunder posted a challenging total of 180 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Rishad was introduced shortly after the power play and immediately made an impact with his control and accuracy. He conceded just six runs in his first over, putting pressure on the Thunder batters, before following it up with an even tighter second over that yielded only four runs. His ability to contain the scoring proved crucial in the middle phase of the innings.
Rishad returned later to bowl his third and last over of his spell on the instructions of Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis. Although eight runs came off that over, the leg-spinner completed an economical spell of 3 overs for 18 runs without taking a wicket. Chris Jordan supported the bowling effort with two wickets, while Billy Stanlake was the most successful bowler for Hobart, claiming three wickets.
Chasing a target of 181, Hobart Hurricanes got off to a strong start through openers Mitchell Owen and Nikhil Chaudhary. Owen struck a rapid 32 off just 14 balls, while Chaudhary anchored the innings with a composed 41 from 31 deliveries. Ben McDermott kept the momentum going in the middle order with a brisk 38 off 24 balls.
The match went down to the wire, but Jordan and skipper Nathan Ellis held their nerve at the end to guide Hobart Hurricanes home with one ball to spare.
