Bangladesh captain Litton Das spoke to reporters after leading his team to a 2-1 T20I series win against Ireland in Chattogram on Tuesday. He reflected on the team’s progress, addressed rumours about his captaincy, and shared his thoughts on the squad’s readiness for the upcoming World Cup.
Question: How do you assess the team’s performance in the Ireland series?
Litton: We wanted to feel pressure and turn that into wins. We couldn’t in the first game, but winning the next two secured the series. Normally, our fielding isn’t exceptional, but in these matches, we took some brilliant catches. That was a big positive.
Question: What about the incident with chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain?
Litton: It was a heated moment, and some things happened on both sides that aren’t good for cricket. But we talked it through calmly afterwards. It won’t happen again.
Question: There are rumours you might step down as captain — is that true?
Litton: No chance. I’ve led the team for a long time and brought it to this point. The squad is organised, and everyone dreams of the World Cup. I won’t step down.
Question: Mahidul Islam Ankon didn’t feature in the series. What do you say about that?
Litton: He was unlucky because we only played three matches and tried three different players in that spot. If there were more games, he’d likely get a chance. The 15 in the squad are the best players; only 11 can play at a time. We do our best to use the squad well.
Question: Are you worried about the middle order?
Litton: Not really. Every player is capable of big scores. For example, Hridoy struggled before but scored well in this series. They just need time and confidence.
Question: How do you balance risks and rewards in team selection?
Litton: We’ve focused on building the team by addressing weak areas and giving chances to players who don’t play regularly. We’ve experimented a lot this year. The core 15 or 16 players are almost ready. The upcoming BPL will be important for maintaining their confidence.
Question: Is the team ready for the World Cup?
Litton: Yes. The squad has been ready for some time — many played in the Asia Cup. The BPL will help players stay sharp. Wherever they play, they will aim to perform at their best, and we will too when we regroup.
Question: What concerns you most before the World Cup?
Litton: Injuries. It would be a big problem if players get injured just before the tournament. I hope we can keep everyone fit.
