Bangladesh’s dream of reaching the final of the 2nd Women’s Kabaddi World Cup ended on Sunday, as they were defeated 25-18 by Chinese Taipei in the semifinal at Mirpur’s Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium.
Despite the loss, the hosts secured a
third-place finish—a big improvement from fifth place in the inaugural edition
in 2012.
The match began with Bangladesh conceding
early points. Captain Rupali Akter, playing her final international game,
couldn’t open the scoring on her first raid, and a defensive lapse allowed
Chinese Taipei to take an early lead.
However, Bangladesh fought back, taking a
5-4 advantage by the eighth minute thanks to a strong raid by Sraboni Mallik.
By halftime, Chinese Taipei led narrowly 9-8.
In the second half, Bangladesh briefly led
10-8, but Chinese Taipei’s experience and tactical edge soon took over. A
crucial all-out in the fifth minute shifted momentum, and the visitors extended
their lead to seal a 25-18 victory, ending Bangladesh’s hopes of a final
showdown with India.
Defender Mst Srity Akhtar said, “Our dream
was to reach the final, but Chinese Taipei were too strong. Their speed,
technique and teamwork were better. Still, we fought hard and gave our best.”
She added that winning a medal at home is a
proud moment and will inspire more girls to take up kabaddi.
Captain Rupali Akter retired from the
national team after the match, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and
dedication.
Chinese Taipei will face defending
champions India in Monday’s final, while Bangladesh celebrate a hard-fought
bronze.
