Bangladesh step onto the global kabaddi stage with renewed purpose as the 2nd Women’s Kabaddi World Cup begins at the Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in Mirpur today. 11 nations, including defending champions India and runners-up Iran, are participating — with Bangladesh hosting the women’s edition for the first time.

For Bangladesh, the event carries added significance as part of the nationwide Festival of Youth announced by the Interim Government.

This time, the hosts arrive with heightened belief, backed by their historic bronze at the 6th Asian Women’s Kabaddi Championship in Iran earlier this year. The coaching staff report improvements in fitness, tactical execution and team cohesion, raising hopes for a podium finish on home soil.

“Our first match is against Uganda and we want to start with a win,” said captain Rupali Akter.

Coach Shahnaz Parvin Maleka added, “A good start is crucial. Since we are hosting, we want to achieve something positive. Keep us in your prayers.”

On Sunday, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus unveiled the tournament trophy at the State Guest House Jamuna alongside all participating captains. Grouped with India, Thailand, Uganda and Germany in Group A, Bangladesh target a strong opening step against debutants Uganda.

Four matches will open the tournament. Following the opening ceremony at 3:00pm, Bangladesh face Uganda, with Nepal meeting Zanzibar, Iran taking on Poland, and Chinese Taipei meeting Kenya in the remaining fixtures.
