Police have recovered the throat-slit bodies of a woman and two children from a house in Homna upazila of Cumilla on Tuesday.
The deceased are Papiya Akter Sukhi, 30, wife of Saudi expatriate Jahirul Islam of Manipur village; their son Hosai, 4; and Jubayer, 5, the son of Jahirul’s younger brother Sattar, who also resides in Saudi Arabia.
The bodies were found inside their home in Manipur area of Gharamora union under the upazila in the morning, confirms Morshedul Alam Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Homna police station.
Locals Delowar Hossain and Aziz Mia said that a neighbour spotted the bodies through a window at around 7:30am and screamed.
Panic spread in the area, and residents called the police, who arrived around 10am.
Relatives said the house belongs to Jahirul. He and Papiya had two daughters -- one married, the other studying at a madrasa.
As both were away, Papiya was caring for her nephew Jubayer, whose father is also abroad.
Papiya’s sister, Selina Akter, arrived at the house after hearing the news. In tears, she demanded justice and called for the swift arrest of the killers.
The OC said the attackers entered the house between 9pm Monday and 8am Tuesday, killing the victims by slitting their throats with sharp weapons.
The three bodies, found in separate rooms, have been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue, he said.
“A broken wardrobe in Papiya’s room suggests valuables were looted. Further details will emerge after the investigation,” said the OC.
