Robi Axiata PLC has recently launched a programme to distribute smart canes to visually impaired individuals, reinforcing its commitment to digital inclusion and accessibility. The initiative provides assistive technology designed to improve safety, mobility, and independence for people with visual impairments.

The distribution event, held recently at Robi’s corporate office in Dhaka, was attended by Shahed Alam, chief corporate and regulatory officer, and Sharif Shah Jamal Raz, director of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Robi, along with Ridwan Hossain, CEO of Drishti Technologies Limited, and other senior officials.

Developed by Drishti Technologies, the Abhash Smart Cane uses sonar-based obstacle detection, haptic feedback, and audio alerts to help users navigate safely and confidently. Bangladesh is home to an estimated four million visually impaired people, many of whom face challenges in mobility, education, and employment.

“Innovation should always serve the greater good,” said Shahed Alam. “The Smart Cane initiative demonstrates how technology can build a more inclusive society, enhancing safety and independence for visually impaired individuals.”

The programme is being implemented in partnership with seven organisations, including the Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital, Visually Impaired People’s Society (VIPS), Real View, BERDO, Doors of Inclusive Society (DIS), Nohor Initiatives, and Sporsho Foundation, ensuring wider outreach and support for beneficiaries.
