Remittance inflows in Bangladesh show significant regional disparities, with Dhaka division receiving the highest share, while Rangpur division remains at the bottom, according to a report from the Bangladesh Bank.
In the first half of the fiscal year 2024-25, Bangladesh received a total of $13,775.88 million in remittances. The Dhaka Division, home to the capital, topped the list with a staggering $6,659 million in remittances. This high inflow is attributed to the region's robust economic activity, the concentration of industries and services, and the large number of expatriates working abroad. Among Dhaka’s 13 districts, Dhaka alone received $4,486 million, while Rajbari district brought in the lowest amount of $58 million.
In stark contrast, Rangpur division recorded just $220 million in remittance inflows during the same period, making it the lowest performer. The region, primarily reliant on agriculture, faces challenges such as a smaller expatriate population and limited banking services, hindering its ability to collect remittances effectively. Rangpur district, the highest contributor in the division, reported $51 million, while Lalmonirhat district lagged behind with only $13 million.

The second-highest remittance inflow has been recorded in the Chattogram division, which received $3,819 million. Chattogram district contributed the largest portion, at $1,132 million, while Bandarban saw the lowest inflow at $11 million. Sylhet Division, traditionally known for its strong remittance ties, ranked third with $1,247 million.
Other divisions, such as Khulna, Rajshahi, Barishal, and Mymensingh, also received significant amounts but were far behind Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet.
Workers' remittances play a crucial role in Bangladesh's economy, contributing to foreign exchange reserves and supporting millions of households. With about 1.3 crore Bangladeshi nationals working abroad, remittances continue to be a lifeline for families, especially amidst the country’s ongoing economic challenges.
