Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has called for establishing an India-Bangladesh Joint Centre of Research in Ayurveda to promote knowledge exchange and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.

He made the call while addressing a programme marking the 11th Ayurveda Day at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) in Gulshan on Wednesday (23 September).

Trivedi highlighted the enduring relevance of traditional knowledge systems in promoting holistic well-being and preventive healthcare.

He said a joint research centre could foster greater academic and professional exchanges, contributing to stronger longstanding people-to-people ties between India and Bangladesh.

The programme, organised by the IGCC, featured an academic session, a workshop and a cultural segment.

IGCC Director Ann Mary George welcomed the guests and highlighted this year’s theme, “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow”. She also outlined the role of India’s Ministry of AYUSH in promoting Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.

The academic session featured a workshop conducted by Dr Md Jakir Hossain, Prof Dr Babul Akter and Dr Mohammad Mamun Mia, with participation from students of various Ayurvedic institutions in Bangladesh.

The cultural segment opened with the inauguration of a Ganpati tapestry made of wool by Bangladeshi artist Shahin Sobhana Surovi, followed by a musical performance by classical and Bangla Khayal vocalist and music educator Ranjan Chandra Sarkar.

The programme concluded with the felicitation of the artist and distribution of certificates among participants from several leading Ayurvedic and Unani institutions.
