President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus issued separate messages on Monday, marking the historic July Uprising Day.
In the massage, the President said, “On this day in 2024, students, workers, and citizens rose in united resistance against a discriminatory state system and fascist misrule, achieving a decisive victory. On the anniversary of this historic triumph, I extend my heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the freedom-loving students and people of the nation.” He paid solemn tribute to the martyrs of the July uprising, who sacrificed their lives to free the nation from authoritarian rule, and prayed for the eternal peace of their souls.
The president said, “I express deep gratitude to the brave July fighters who were injured, disabled, or lost their eyesight in the movement. Ensuring justice for the martyrs’ families and the wounded is a sacred duty – and the state remains committed to upholding it.”
He described the July Uprising as a mass outburst of youth and citizens against decades of deprivation, misrule, corruption, enforced disappearances, killings, denial of voting rights, and all forms of oppression.
The July uprising aimed to dismantle the discriminatory fascist system, restore democracy, empower the people, and ensure freedom of expression with the aim of building a happy, prosperous Bangladesh. The fascist roots must be uprooted, and the spirit of July fully realised, said the president.
Following the July Uprising, the state has launched extensive reforms. Through this process, the hopes of the uprising will be fulfilled, and a new Bangladesh rooted in justice and equality will emerge through a true democratic transition, the president added in his message.
He wishes all the programmes undertaken on the occasion of July Uprising Day a great success.
In his message, the chief adviser said, “Today marks a historic chapter in Bangladesh’s history. Exactly one year ago, the July Uprising triumphed, liberating our beloved nation from the grip of long-standing fascist rule.”
Prof Yunus said that since taking office, the interim government has launched extensive reforms across all state sectors to realise these aspirations – to restore democracy and return the country to its people.
“Trials over the July killings are progressing swiftly. Efforts are underway to honour the July martyrs and support injured fighters. To advance democracy, dialogue with political parties on reforms continues. The interim government is committed to returning power to the people through free, fair, and transparent elections as part of a lasting political solution,” he said.
The chief adviser further said that the sacrifice of thousands has given us a rare chance for national reform, which we must protect at all costs. Yet, fallen autocrats and their allies continue to conspire against our progress.
“Let us unite beyond all divisions to confront and overcome these threats. Together, we will build a Bangladesh where tyranny can never rise again,” he urged.
