BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday urged the people of the country to remain vigilant, emphasising that the transition to democracy has yet to be achieved.
“We must remain alert. Our struggle is not over. We have not yet witnessed a genuine transition to democracy,” he said while speaking at a commemoration event in honour of the late BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Kakrail, Dhaka.
“We have not yet had an elected government and parliament through truly participatory elections. Therefore, we must continue our efforts with caution, resolve and awareness. We need to strengthen both the party and the organisation,” he added.
Mirza Fakhrul described the current period as a testing time for the people of Bangladesh. “You must have noticed – by reading newspapers, watching television and talk show – that a sense of instability persists. Issues once considered settled have now become uncertain,” he noted.
“Today, we hear a lot about reforms and elections. We believe these matters must be addressed with utmost seriousness. It is the collective responsibility of all political parties to resolve the existing crises through sincere dialogue,” he added.
Referring to the recent killing of Chhatra Dal leader Jahedul Islam Parvez, a student at Prime Asia University, he stated,“There is no doubt that those capable of killing a committed student leader at this time were never part of the movement for change in Bangladesh.”
