Govt working to establish accreditation council for hospitals

The government is working to establish an accreditation council for medical colleges and hospitals in order to ensure and maintain standards across healthcare institutions.

Prof Dr Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the Chief Adviser for Health and Family Welfare, revealed the initiative at a programme on Thursday.

“It is important to have an accreditation council to ensure that these detailed tasks are properly carried out. The council is already working on the evaluation of medical colleges,” Dr Rahman said while speaking at the opening ceremony of the three-day Dhaka International Diagnostic Medical Equipment Expo 2025, held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center (BCFCC) in Dhaka.

This is the first time such a large-scale event focusing on diagnostic medical equipment has been organised in Bangladesh.

Dr Rahman said efforts are underway to standardise both public and private medical colleges and hospitals. “I personally believe there should be no distinction between government and private institutions in this regard. These must be brought under a unified legal framework,” he stated.

He also noted that the regulatory environment in the healthcare sector is complex. “There should be designated medical inspectors working alongside the administration to oversee diagnostic and medical services.
