Defending champions Bashundhara Kings are gearing up for a must-win clash against table-toppers Mohammedan SC in a high-voltage Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) fixture on Saturday. The showdown, set to kick off at 5:30 PM BST at the Kings Arena, could prove pivotal in shaping the league title race.
Mohammedan currently sit at the summit with 27 points from 10 matches, while the Kings trail in third place with 20 points from the same number of games. The stakes are even higher considering the Kings suffered a 1-0 defeat to Mohammedan in the first leg earlier this season.
Coming off a Federation Cup qualifier defeat to Abahani Limited on Tuesday, the Kings are battling several injury concerns. Key defenders Tariq Kazi and Biswanath Ghosh remain sidelined, although the inclusion of Brazilian centre-back Deciel has added some much-needed stability at the back. Captain Miguel Figueira also missed the last match due to family reasons in Brazil.
Mohammedan, on the other hand, are returning to a venue they remember for all the wrong reasons. During the season-opening Bangladesh Challenge Cup, they alleged that smoke flares thrown from the stands disrupted play while they were in the lead. Despite submitting a formal complaint at the time, no action was taken—until now.
Ahead of this weekend’s crucial fixture, Mohammedan sent a fresh letter directly to the BFF President, prompting the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) to respond. A letter signed by BFF General Secretary Imran Hossain was sent to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner, requesting increased security measures. A copy was also forwarded to Vatara Police Station, in an effort to ensure a safe and fair environment this time around.
With only a handful of matches remaining in the season, the stakes couldn’t be higher. A loss for the Kings could deliver a heavy blow to their title hopes, while a win for Mohammedan would significantly strengthen their position at the top. If Mohammedan drop points, Abahani Limited, currently second, could benefit.
Meanwhile, the 11th round of the BPL resumed on Friday after a 48-day break, producing two decisive results. Bangladesh Police FC thrashed Fakirerpool YMC 3–0 at Shaheed Barkat Stadium, Gazipur and Rahmatganj MFS secured a 2–0 victory over Chittagong Abahani Ltd. at Shaheed Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium, Munshiganj.
All eyes will be on the heavyweight clash between Kings and Mohammedan on Saturday, but two other important fixtures are also on the cards. In Gazipur, Abahani Limited will face Dhaka Wanderers Club and Brothers Union take on Fortis FC in Munshiganj.
