The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a lawsuit against former state minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday over acquiring around Tk5.74 crore beyond the known sources of his income.
According to the case statement, Khalid made suspicious transactions of Tk13.68 crore through his 11 bank accounts and 5 card accounts, said ACC director general (prevention) and its spokesperson Akthar Hossain in a media briefing at its headquarters at Segunbagicha in the capital.
The ACC director general said Khalid amassed the asset illegally while serving as a member of the parliament from Dinajpur-2 for Awami League and acting as the state minister for shipping.
According to the case document, Khalid – who allegedly fled Bangladesh after his government was ousted in a mass upsurge – was sued under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act- 2004, Section 4(2) (3) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act-2012 and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act- 1947.
Aside from corruption cases, he was also accused in a number of murder cases for allegedly being involved in killing students and masses during the July Uprising against his government last year, which forced former autocratic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India.
