At least 24 people died in separate road accidents in different parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday, mainly due to reckless driving, risky behaviour of passengers, and poor management of precarious roads.
Ten people were killed and 3 were severely injured in a collision between a bus and a microbus on Wednesday morning at the Jangalia point on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in Lohagara upazila.

Seven of the victims died on the spot and among them six were identified – Dilip Biswas (43), Sadhana Biswas (37), Aradhya Biswas (7), Ashish Mandol (50), Durjoy Mandol (18) and microbus driver Md Yusuf Ali (57) – all hailing from Lohagara upazila. Three more died at the hospital.
Earlier, on 31 March, five people were killed and six others injured in a deadly road accident in Chunti area. With this, the death toll in five separate accidents in Chattogram during the Eid holidays has risen to 17. Some 30 people were also injured in the crashes.
Members from Lohagara fire service and police station rescued the injured and sent them to the nearby hospitals. Vehicle movement on the busy highway remained suspended for around three hours. One of the deceased, Dilip, hailing from Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah district, used to run garment-related business at Gazipur and reside with family there.
Families of Dilip and one of his colleagues were going to the tourist heartland Cox’s Bazar from Gazipur to enjoy the vacation. Police and witnesses said a bus of Relax Transport was heading towards Chattogram from Cox’s Bazar.
As the bus lost control after passing a dangerous bend in the Jangalia area on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway under the Lohagara upazila, the microbus carrying the victims collided head-on with it in the middle of the road at 7:15am.
At that time, another Cox’s Bazar-bound microbus hit the first microbus from behind. The microbus carrying the vacationers was damaged badly in the collisions leaving seven dead on the spot and four others injured, said Lohagara Police Station Officer in-Charge (OC) Arifur Rahman.
On information, locals and members of the Fire Service and Civil Defence department rushed to the spot. They recovered the bodies and rescued the injured.
Of the injured, one succumbed to injuries at Lohagara Health Complex while two others at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said the OC adding that the deceased include five male, four female and one child.
CMCH Police Outpost In-Charge Sub-Inspector Nurul Alam Asheq said four injured were brought to the hospital and two of them died while undergoing treatment.
One of the injured, Araddhya Biswas (7), daughter of Dilip, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital in critical condition, only could say her name.
Sadhana’s Uncle Bidhan Mandol, who was coming to Chattogram after the incident, told the Daily Sun over phone that Dilip used to run business and reside with family in Gazipur.
When asked about the repeated accidents in the same area, Dohazari Highway Police Station OC Shuvranjan Chakma said, "There are dangerous bends near the accident spots while the road lacks proper signals."
Moreover, drivers fall victim to accidents often as they are unfamiliar with the narrow highway, he added.
Earlier, two motorcyclists were killed in separate accidents at the Lohagara and Mirsharai upazilas on Tuesday night.
On the same day, two microbuses carrying tourists overturned in separate incidents leaving nine passengers injured under the Lohagara upazila.
Besides, five young men were killed and eleven others were injured in a head-on collision between two passenger buses within 50 yards of the Jangalia area on the Eid day on Monday.

The vehicle deviated off the road and crashed into an electric pole and a tree, leaving one dead and 27 others injured. Two of the injured succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. All three were male.
The injured were initially treated at Chandina Upazila Health Complex before being referred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
