Rezaul Karim Mallick, chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said that strict security measures have been put in place across the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
He made this statement during a media briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Mintu Road in the capital on Saturday.
Mallick said that DB activities have been intensified around shopping malls, railway stations, bus terminals, and launch terminals as part of the Eid-ul-Fitr preparations.
“DB is always ready to assist the citizens and ensure a smooth and safe Eid journey. We are prepared to prevent any untoward incidents,” said the police officer. “The morale of all DB members is stronger than ever before. We continue to work diligently to gain the trust of the city residents and to be recognised as an 'embodied fright' for criminals,” he said.
Mallick, also the additional police commissioner of DMP, urged citizens to contact the national emergency service, 999, in case of danger.
He added, ‘If any unfortunate incident occurs or seems likely during Eid at any location—be it in the neighbourhood, home, or market—please inform the nearest police outpost, police station, or DB.’
Additionally, Mallick mentioned that the DB’s cyber team has ramped up surveillance using information technology to prevent the spread of misinformation during Eid. He also emphasised DB’s efforts to curb the production and circulation of counterfeit currency ahead of the holiday.
The DB has already arrested several members of an active gang involved in producing fake currency and seized a large quantity of counterfeit notes and equipment used for their production. The cyber team is also monitoring online platforms around the clock to prevent the sale of fake currency.
He said, “If there is any information regarding potential sabotage, chaos, or security risks—particularly in shopping malls or other Eid-related locations—please inform the DB immediately.”
