Oxford University has awarded Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed an honorary fellowship for life in recognition of his distinguished contributions to protecting the rule of law, human rights, and ensuring justice.
A press release from the Supreme Court confirmed the news on Wednesday.
The Oxford University accolade not only acknowledges the chief justice’s personal achievements but also reflects the growing respect the world has for Bangladesh’s judicial system, the press release stated.
The fellowship is undoubtedly a testament to the international recognition of the improvements, intellectual integrity, and commitment to justice within the Bangladesh judicial system, the press release added.
Syed Refaat Ahmed completed his LLB at Dhaka University and his postgraduate law studies at Wadham College, Oxford University, UK, where he achieved first-class honours.
He became the 25th chief justice of the country following the fall of the Awami League regime on 5 August last year. Upon taking office, he outlined a series of measures to reform the country’s flawed judicial system.
