Md Sabiul Islam, the executive engineer of Gaibandha district of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), who was arrested by joint forces along with about Tk37 lakh in Singra upazila of Natore, has been suspended.

A notification signed by Md Nizam Uddin, secretary of the Development Branch of the (LGED) was issued on Tuesday in this regard.

According to the notification, Sabiul Islam was accused of leaving his workplace without permission from the authorities and was carrying illegal money in his car as per the media reports.

Earlier, on 16 March, a show cause notice was issued to Sabiul Islam seeking an explanation as to why disciplinary action should not be taken against him within the next seven working days over the matter.

On 14 March, law enforcers recovered Tk36,94,300 from his car during a search on the Natore-Bogura highway at Singra in Natore. During initial interrogation, the engineer, along with his driver, who were both taken to Singra police station, claimed that he had received the money from the sale of his land. However, he did not explain why he was transporting the money in the dead of night.
