The gruesome acts of Mohammad Anwar, the alleged ringleader of the notorious “Kabjikata Group” (Wrist-cutting Group), sent a chilling wave of fear in Adabor and Mohammadpur areas of the city for months.
The gang’s signature crime was the severing of the wrists of their targets and then making TikTok videos featuring the severed limbs.
However, much to the relief of the locals, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Anwar along with two of his cohorts from Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital on Monday. His associates are Mohammad Emon, 20, and Mohammad Farid, 27.
Anwar, 36, allegedly cut off the wrists of seven people alongside committing other serious crimes.
Commanding Officer (CO) of RAB-2 Khalidul Haque Howlader revealed the information at a press briefing at the Karwan Bazar media centre of the elite force on Tuesday.
He said Anwar confessed to cutting off the wrists of three people. But RAB’s investigation found that he had severed the wrists of seven people. After each horrific act, Anwar and his cohorts would create TikTok videos with the severed organs, disseminating them across social media.
About the modus operandi of the gang, Khalidul Haque said the gangsters used to create artificial traffic jams. Amidst the chaotic bottlenecks, they struck their target. Anwar’s teams, positioned strategically in front and behind him beforehand, ensured a swift attack and an equally swift escape.
Anwar’s story is a disturbing tale of transformation -- from a humble water supplier to a terror.
Arriving in Dhaka from Bagerhat in 2005, he used to work as a drinking water supplier. However, the path diverged at one stage, taking him to the dark realm of crime and violence.
He formed a gang and turned different city areas like Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan, Nabinagar Housing, Chandrima Housing, Shyamoli Housing, Shekhertek and Nobodoy Housing as his hunting grounds.
Asked about who patronised Anwar, the RAB officer said one Excel Babu was patronising him.
After the arrest of some of his cohorts, including Bhagne Billal, Anwar went into hiding, but continued his crimes with the help of his other accomplices.
Earlier, Anwar was arrested in 2019. He was wanted in a number of criminal cases.
