The Election Commission (EC) has officially registered the Bangladesh Development Party (BDP) as a political party following a court order and allocated it the election symbol “Cauliflower”.
According to an official notification signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Sunday, the registration was granted in compliance with a High Court verdict on 12 December.
The statement read, “In light of the verdict and order given by the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, the Bangladesh Development Party has been registered as a political party under the provisions of the Representation of the People Order until further notice. The party has been assigned the symbol ‘Cauliflower,’ with registration number 54.”
The party’s chairman, AKM Anwarul Islam, had filed a writ petition in the High Court after the Election Commission initially denied BDP’s registration.
Following the 12 December ruling, he told reporters, “On 25 May 2023, we filed a writ petition against the Election Commission’s decision. On 23 June 2023, the High Court issued a rule asking why our party should not be registered. After the hearing, the court ruled in our favour.”
BDP initially applied for registration on 26 October 2022, but the Election Commission rejected the application on 10 April 2023.
