The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has initiated a nationwide crackdown on unauthorised GPS tracking service providers, disrupting millions of users.
The regulatory body has begun shutting down the servers of vehicle tracking service (VTS) companies that are either unlicensed or lack BTRC approval to offer GPS services.
Among those targeted in recent drives are Motolock, Tasslock, and Sinotrack, whose servers have been deactivated due to their unauthorised operations.
This action follows warnings issued last year when the Rapid Action Battalion arrested three individuals in Dhaka for possessing and selling GPS trackers illegally, including Tasslock GPS trackers and Motolock frequency devices.

As part of the crackdown, BTRC has blocked at least 36 URLs, IP addresses and servers linked to illegal GPS services.
Internet service providers, international internet gateways and telecom operators have been instructed to comply with the regulator’s directives.
BTRC is also investigating how these unauthorised companies obtained bulk SIM cards without proper authorisation.
The move has caused widespread inconvenience for thousands of customers who relied on these illegal GPS providers.
Users of Tasslock, Motolock, Sinotrack and similar operators have reported significant disruptions.

Facing legal and social backlash, some owners of these unlicensed companies are reportedly attempting to flee the country.
Additionally, BTRC has recently revoked the licenses of four vehicle tracking service companies in a further attempt to curtail illegal operations.
Industry experts and regulators have urged affected users to transition to authorised VTS providers, as the crackdown on illegal operators is expected to intensify with regular raids and server shutdowns.
The Vehicle Tracking Service Provider Associations of Bangladesh has welcomed the initiative, stating that it will promote fair competition and encourage the use of legal vehicle tracking services.
Mir Shahrukh Islam, managing director of Bondstein Technologies, lauded BTRC’s actions, calling them timely and beneficial for the sector.
“This decision will bolster the legitimate VTS industry and play a significant role in enhancing the country’s tech ecosystem. It will also boost government revenue, contributing positively to our economy,” he said.
