Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) Sports Club applied for the club licensing process to play in the upcoming Bangladesh Championship League (BCL) 2024-25. The club, which shut down their footballing activities almost 10-year ago when they were relegated from the Third Division Football League in the season 2015, decided to return to football with a vision to earn more revenue.
“BRTC are playing football after around a 10-year break thanked to our Chairman Md Tazul Islam sir (additional secretary). Our main goal is to take BRTC to a new height so that we need to earn more revenue. Also, our colleagues and employees need entertainment. So we decided to return football,” BRTC Sports Cup president Dr Anupam Saha, who is also the Finance and Accounting Director, told the Daily Sun on Wednesday.
“We don’t know why they (the previous officials of BRTC) shut down footballing activities 10 years ago. Now we have again decided to resume it, but on a small scale for now. BRTC once could not pay salaries but now we’ve formed a football club and decided to play (in the professional league), it is a big thing for us.”
The club authority is currently recruiting footballers from their employees or their family members countrywide to form the team for the country's second-tier professional football league as it has a fund issue, but the club president said they would also sign professional footballers in future.
