The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday arrested a former ward councillor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) and another person as suspects in the shooting and killing of another ex-councillor of Ward-4 of the same corporation and Shechchhasebak League leader Golam Rabbani Tipu.

The arrestees are Sheikh Hasan Iftekhar alias Chalu, ex-councillor of KCC Ward-16 and president of an Awami League ward unit, and Meshabul Huq Bhutto.

RAB-15 commander Lieutenant Colonel HM Sajjad Hossain said the councillor was arrested from hotel Golden Hill in the Sagar Par hotel-motel zone on Thursday night.

He said earlier, the victim, Tipu, Iftekhar and a woman checked into Golden Hill. When Tipu and the woman went outside together in the evening, he was shot on a footpath near hotel Seagull at 8:20pm on Thursday.

The woman accompanying him could not be traced yet, said the RAB official.

He said that the mystery of this murder will be unraveled soon and those involved will be brought to justice.

Manager of the Golden Hill Hotel Mohammad Shafiq said, "On Thursday morning, Golam Rabbani Tipu and three others including a woman named Rumi (27) checked in the hotel. They stayed in a two room flat in the hotel.”
