With the mouths agape with incredulity, the countrymen are finding it quite difficult to believe how the Hasina family has ravaged the country, leaving marks of wounds that will not go away in many years. Every day new pieces of information are getting exposed, pushing the masses into a state of extreme shock. In a recent development, it has been revealed that Tulip Siddiq, the daughter of Sheikh Rehana and the niece of the recently-ousted Bangladeshi premier Sheikh Hasina, owns properties in the UK that have been gifted to her by her aunt’s allies.
It seems like the legacy of corruption runs deep into Hasina’s family. During the 16-year rule of the fascist regime led by Hasina, around $234 billion has been siphoned off from Bangladesh (according to findings of the white paper). Interestingly, a major portion of this laundered money have been sent or routed through the UK, the UAE, Canada and Singapore. The UK, where Tulip lives, is on this list. What is more shocking is that Tulip is the anti-corruption minister of the UK government. Someone who has been entrusted with the responsibility of fighting corruption is now being questioned for her alleged involvement in a scandal linked to the ousted Bangladeshi prime minister.
During the AL-led fascist regime, Hasina has repeatedly abjured all wrongdoings by her partymen and associates. But now we know how she and her family members did mala fide abuse of the power to amass wealth by resorting to rampant corruption.
Tulip’s involvement, despite holding an important portfolio in a developed country, in such trifling corruption scandal, is embarrassing for Bangladeshi people as her aunt was once the premier of this country. Most importantly, it lays bare the horrifying truth of a family’s (Hasina and her relatives) moral compass, leaving the people trapped in the midst of awful realities. Now that the accounts of Hasina family’s moral proclivity are getting revealed, we cannot but wonder what else this family did to our country in the last 16 years.
We expect that Tulip will finally come to her senses and open up about her involvement in corruption carried out by her aunt. Meanwhile, the UK authorities must follow its due course of law to look into this matter and unearth the whole truth.
