A trial train runs at 120 kilometres per hour on Sunday on the Jamuna Rail Bridge, the largest rail bridge in Bangladesh.
A trial train on Sunday successfully ran at a speed of 120 kilometres per hour on the country’s largest rail bridge, the Jamuna Rail Bridge, constructed over the River Jamuna connecting Tangail and Sirajganj.
Train operations began at around 9:30am on the day on the up and down lines at a speed of 60 kilometres per hour. Later, at around 3:30pm, the train reached a speed of 120 kilometres per hour.
Project Director Al Fattah Md Masudur Rahman said that on 26 November 2024, the railway bridge conducted
its initial trial at a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour.
“Today, the trial trains operated at speeds of 60 kilometres per hour, followed by 80, 90, 100, 110, and finally 120 kilometres per hour. The trial runs will continue until tomorrow. If everything goes well, the rail bridge will soon be opened for train operations.”
According to project sources, the construction of the bridge began in August 2020, with an initial budget of Tk9,734.7 crore. The cost later increased to Tk16,780.96 crore, with Tk12,149.2 crore provided as a loan by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The original project timeline was from July 2016 to December 2023, but after the first revision, the deadline was extended to December 2024.
Previously, on 6 December 2016, the project received approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
The interim government has recently renamed the bridge to “Jamuna Railway Bridge”.
Currently, 38 trains operate via the Bangabandhu Bridge.
Once the new rail bridge is operational, 68 trains, including high-speed freight trains, will run on the double line domestically. I will also enhance interconnectivity with various neighbouring countries.
