Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain inaugurated the new cargo vehicle terminal at Benapole Land Port in Jashore, managed by the Bangladesh Land Port Authority.
During the event, he highlighted Benapole’s role as a key hub for cross-border trade, with 500–600 Indian and 450–500 Bangladeshi cargo trucks arriving daily.
Previously, congestion was common due to limited terminal space, with trucks often clogging roads. The new facility, which spans 41 acres and accommodates up to 1,500 trucks, will help streamline cargo operations and alleviate traffic jams, enhancing import-export efficiency, Adviser Sakhawat said.
The terminal includes parking yards, port service buildings, modern firefighting systems, CCTV for security, and other key infrastructure, including a 100 MT capacity Weybridge scale and drainage system. The project, launched in 2022 with an investment of Tk329.28 crore, aims to modernise Benapole Port and boost revenue through improved efficiency.
After the inauguration, Hossain held a meeting with port officials to discuss further improvements, including new warehouses, better passenger services, enhanced security, and the elimination of corruption at the port. Additional dignitaries, including Shipping Ministry Additional Secretary Delwara Begum and Bangladesh Land Port Authority Chairman Mohammad Manzarul Mannan, attended the ceremony.
