The High Court on Wednesday acquitted former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar in a corruption case where he was sentenced to eight years in prison for accumulating illegal wealth.
The HC division bench of Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah delivered the judgment following an appeal filed by Babar challenging the trial court’s decision.
Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir represented Babar in the court along with lawyer Zayed bin Amjad. Talking to reporters, Shishir Manir said despite his acquittal in this case, Babar will remain in jail due to his involvement in other cases.

Mirza Zahidul Alam, an assistant director of the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) integrated district office in Chittagong-1, filed the case against Babar at Ramna Model Police Station on 13 January 2008.
ACC Deputy Director Rupok Kumar Saha, the investigation officer, submitted the charge sheet on 16 July 2008, and the charges were accepted by the court on 23 July. Charges were framed against Babar on 12 August 2008.
On 12 October 2021, Judge Mohammad Shahidul Islam of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-7 sentenced Babar to eight years in prison for amassing illegal wealth amounting to Tk 7.5 crore.
