‘Flood damages crops, properties worth Tk14,269cr’

Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Farooq E Azam has said that the recent spell of flooding has damaged crops and properties worth Tk14,269 crore in 11 districts across the country.
The amount of damage has been calculated based on the information received from various ministries, the adviser said while talking to reports at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
He said the recent flood has affected a total of 9,42,831 people, leaving at least 74 people dead and 68 others injured.
Crops worth more than Tk2,308 crore have been fully damaged, while crops worth Tk718.5 crore have been partially damaged due to flooding, the adviser said.
He said, "A central committee has already been formed under the leadership of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief for the rehabilitation of the flood-affected people. There will also be such committees at the district and upazila levels. They will monitor the entire rehabilitation programme."
Farmers in flood-affected areas have demanded that installments of microloans should not be taken for the time being. When asked whether the government has taken any initiative in this regard, the advisor said that the farmers will not have to pay installments till next October.
Meanwhile, Primary and Mass Education Affairs Adviser Prof Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy Podder said that the recent flood has damaged educational institutions worth Tk32 crore in 11 flood-affected districts. “We have already allocated funds to cover the damage,” he added.
Bidhan Ranjan Roy also said that the primary education programme will return to normal within a month.
