BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed the hope that the interim government will implement its reform plans as soon as possible to hold the general election to allow the state to be run by an elected government.
“The interim government is working on reforms. We are committed to giving them time and scope. Hopefully, they will complete their work as soon as possible and go for the election,” he said while addressing a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Thursday.
Mirza Fakhrul said Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus in his speech to the nation on Wednesday described some reform plans. “He boldly outlined the vision of his government.”
“We are all talking about reforms and we have said the reforms are necessary. In that case, let these reforms be done very quickly. The main thing is that we expect the rule of people's representatives and a parliament elected by people. These should happen quickly for democracy,” he said.
Wishing the success of the interim government, which has come through the movement, the BNP leader said there is no alternative to democracy. “Democracy is the only system which can reflect the aspirations of the people. For that, building democratic institutions is the most important task. But there should be people's participation in that work. It should be about what the people want. Hopefully, the government will realise it,” he added.
He also hoped that those who are entrusted with the task of reforms will carry out the duty smoothly as per people's expectations.
The BNP secretary general said their party's Standing Committee has decided to observe International Democracy Day, which falls on Sunday, very seriously to institutionalise democracy as the party has taken a two-day programme to mark the day.
As part of it, a rally will be held at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital at 3:30pm tomorrow with the participation of families of the martyrs and those who have been injured and tortured during the democratic movement in the last 14-15 years, he said. “There will be various cultural programmes, dramas and poetry recitation during the gathering,” he added.
