BCB walking on thin ice

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s tournament committee chairman Sazzadul Alam said on Tuesday that he hasn’t received any notice to attend the next board of directors meeting, scheduled at the youth and sports ministry today.
Both the incidents raised quite a few eyebrows ahead of the board meeting that is expected to conclude Nazmul Hossain’s era as BCB president, who called the meeting and expected to resign from his post, after the end of it.

Daily Sun earlier reported that Sazzadul is not ready to resign like the way Jalal Yunus did and is waiting for a decision in this regard from National Sports Council (NSC) as they were nominated as board directors through them.

“I have not resigned (from BCB) and as I understand my tenure runs till October 2025,” Sazzadul told Daily Sun on Tuesday.
“(Despite not resigning) I haven’t received any notice from the board to attend the board meeting,” he said.
The constitution allows NSC to have five councilors on the board, with the authority to appoint two of them as directors in the 25-member board of directors.

It is understood that the BCB is in communication with the NSC to manage the board, and according to their guidelines, it is expected that the NSC-appointed directors will remain on the board. However, it is not clearly mentioned in the constitution whether NSC can force any councilor to quit or not and wether it will be considered as inference of government or not.
Another BCB director confirmed to Daily Sun that they have received a notification in their (BCB board directors) WhatsApp group while later a BCB employee sent him a picture of the notice letter in his WhatsApp number.

While, neither BCB nor NSC is yet to clear their stance as far as directorship of Sazzadul is concerned calling the board meeting in the ministry is surely something to ponder considering the decision itself suggest that there can be some kind of government interference, if not anything else, that forced BCB to call the meeting in ministry.
If that is fact BCB might have to pay it dearly as any kind of government interference in board matters might not go well with the governing body of the sport.
ICC recently put sanctions on Sri Lanka Cricket for similar reasons before their sanction was lifted after convincing ICC about no involvement of the government in their board affair.
“This is unusual and unprecedented,” Sazzadul said when his attention was drawn regarding the board meeting in the ministry.

Another BCB official said that if ICC wants to interpret it (having a BCB board meeting in ministry) as some kind of government interference in that case they will have to clear the issue.
“There is no hard and fast rule that the board meeting needs to happen at the BCB, before this we have hosted the meeting at Dhaka club, Sylhet Rose Views, and the hotels we have agreements with such as Pan Pacific,” said the official.
“However, it doesn’t feel right that the board meeting is taking place at the ministry. If ICC interprets it as interference of the government then they can do it,” he said adding that the government body of the sport will also be well aware that there is change in the whole country that could have prompted us to host the meeting in ministry.
