A Bangladeshi environmental journalist will receive the Developing Asia Journalism Award (DAJA) in Tokyo on 8 July.
Abu Siddique, editor of environmental news site Mongabay.com, has been awarded for his winning entry titled 'Amid Changing Climate, Farmer Groups in Bangladesh Conserve Indigenous Rice Seeds'.
The article depicted the story of a man from Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira who collected and preserved seeds of indigenous, salt-tolerant rice varieties to help farmers adapt to the changing climate.
During the award-giving ceremony, Abu Siddique and his fellow awardees will discuss how journalism and research can complement each other to inform climate risk, adaptation, and mitigation efforts with ADBI staff, the DAJA judges, and advisory panel.
Hosted by the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI), the DAJA programme rewards top journalism that accurately reports on global efforts advancing sustainable development amid intensifying climate risks, according to a press release. Chosen from more than 160 entries from across Asia and the Pacific, the five winning journalists published articles that illustrate the diverse impacts of climate change on people's lives and livelihoods, it said.
Siddique worked for a decade at some of the country's top news outlets, including the Dhaka Tribune, Daily Sun, and The Business Standard, as well as influential global news media The Third Pole and Climate Home News, before becoming an editor at Mongabay.
