An additional deputy commissioner of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has been suspended for allegedly providing graft information about former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia.

The temporarily suspended officer Jisanul Hoque, who is posted at the GMP CT SB, has been attached to the Rangpur Range DIG office. The Public Security Department of the Home Ministry issued a circular in this regard on Sunday.

According to the circular, the police officer has been suspected as his involvement has been found in activities contrary to discipline. Earlier on 19 June, the Police Headquarters sent a letter to the home minister recommending suspension of the GMP officer, with divisional action against him. Crime experts believe that such a suspension sends a strong message to the officers who want to fight against corruption as per the government’s zero-tolerance policy and is an attempt to protect corrupt people.

Dr Md Tawohidul Haque, associate professor at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research of the University of Dhaka, told the Daily Sun that taking action against those who provide information about corruption is an attempt to protect the corrupt.

He said some police officers may be afraid to make their graft information public.
The suspension is a message against those who provide information about transplants, he said.
