Several news reports about people spotting a species of venomous snakes called ‘Russell’s Viper’ in several places of the country have recently created a wide stir among the people. The presence of the snakes has reportedly put farmers in a precarious position too. Known among the local people as “Chandrabora”, these snakes typically inhabit low-lying grasslands, thickets, open forests, and agricultural areas. So, the panic is not rational for people in many cases as the snakes avoid human encounters. Nevertheless, this can be an appropriate time to address the issue of fatalities due to snake bites in the country. A 2023 study says about 7,000 people die every year in Bangladesh from snake bites. And it has been claimed that most of the victims of snake-bites survive if treated with anti-venom quickly.

Against the backdrop of Russell’s viper fear, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change has come up with a comprehensive guideline for people. Snake bites victims have been advised to seek medical support at the nearest hospitals and not waste time with traditional healers. Meanwhile, the health minister has assured people that Russell’s viper anti-venom is available at government hospitals free of cost.

Well, the people must get the promised facility in case of snake bites and authorities concerned must ensure a sufficient stock of the anti-venom in all hospitals across the country, especially in the rural areas where snake bite incidents are more frequent. Besides, common people need more awareness regarding snakes and snake bites. There is a tendency among people to kill snakes indiscriminately wherever they are found— which may not always be a right thing to do. These snakes are part of the food chain, so their absence may create an imbalance in the animal kingdom. Their venoms are useful for making anti-venoms. So, local authorities can conduct awareness programmes to educate the public about safety measures and the importance of preserving wildlife including snakes.
