Tk11,690cr budget allocation for public universities

The Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a budget of Tk11,690.04 crore for the 55 public universities for the fiscal year 2024-25, including Tk188.64 crore for research.
The UGC itself has been allocated Tk87.40 crore for its management, including its own income.

The budget was approved during a full commission meeting chaired by UGC Chairman (Additional Charge) Professor Muhammad Alamgir on Wednesday at the UGC Auditorium. Md Rezaul Karim Howladar, director of Finance and Accounts at UGC, presented the budget details. UGC Secretary Ferdous Zaman was also present on the occasion.

According to UGC data, Tk5,500 crore has been earmarked as government grants for public universities, with an estimated revenue of Tk1,272.53 crore generated by these universities. Additionally, Tk4,917.51 crore has been approved for 31 development projects for the next fiscal year.

Dhaka University received the highest revenue allocation of Tk804.41 crore and the largest research budget of Tk20 crore. Overall, Tk188.65 crore has been approved for research across all public universities, an increase from the current year’s allocation of Tk145.30 crore.
