The body of one of two children who went missing in a canal in the city was found on Wednesday.
As a result, at least thirteen people, including children, young people, and the elderly, met a tragic end after falling into the city's sewers and canals in recent years. However, the identity of the recovered child, reportedly a street urchin, could not be known.

With this, at least 13 people, including children, youth, and the elderly, met tragic ends after falling into the drains and canals in the city over the last few years.
Earlier, the two minor boys claimed to be one Rasel and Tanvir went missing after descending in the Rajakhali Khal, near Bera Market of Fishery Ghat, for playing on Tuesday afternoon, two days after another one met a tragic end by falling into an open drain in the city.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aftab Uddin of Bakolia police station said, based on information, they recovered the body of the child on Wednesday morning.
The identity of the child aged below 10 years couldn’t be known, he said, adding that the body was sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

Mentionable, the unprotected and open drains and canals in the port city often claim lives due to the indifference of the authorities concerned. The risks run high during the rainy season, as logged water doesn’t let anyone notice the risky underwater drains and canals along the roads. The body of an eight-year-old boy, Saidul Islam alias Jasim, son of rickshaw-puller Ali Akbar of the city’s Abidar Para area, was found in a canal on Sunday after he went missing, reportedly falling into a drain in the area on Saturday.

On the other hand, college student Azizul Hakim Emon, 27, son of Kazi Md Iqbal of the city’s Eidgah area, also died falling into a canal amid heavy rainfall and gusty wind on 27 May.  Sources said many drains and canals in the city’s different areas, including Halishahar, Muradpur, Bohoddarhat, and Bakolia, remain open, posing a risk of accidents at any time.
According to sources in Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), there are a total of 57 canals and 765 kilometres of drains in the city. The CCC earlier identified some 19-kilometre areas as risky in a survey they conducted in 2021. But none of the authorities concerned, including the CCC and Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), paid heed to the crisis.
