A man died and a number of people fell sick after inhaling toxic gas in the capital’s Adabar area early on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Kabir Hossain, a day labourer by profession.
Kabir was first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and from where he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died.
Local and police said that the toxic gas emerged from an old gas cylinder while it was being scrapped at a scrap material shop on Embankment Road in Shyamoli Housing Project-2 area.
Police arrested Kalu Mia, the owner of the shop.
After the incident, the Crime Scene of Criminal Investigation Department and Bomb Disposal Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police visited the spot and collected evidence, said police.
Abul Hashem, manager of Smart Technology Garage adjacent to the scrap materials shop, said that about 25 people were sleeping at the garage.
At about 3:30am, he felt sick in sleeping condition after inhaling toxic gas, he said, adding that getting up, he came out of the garage. ‘I then found many other felling sick and some fell on the ground. I informed our office of the matter. After that, we were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital,” he said.
Some of the injured were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where one died, he said.
Quoting locals police said that the gas cylinder was being scrapped at the shop of Kalu.
Mohammad Shafiur Rahman, director of the hospital, said that 14 were admitted to the hospital; of them, nine went to their residences after taking first aid and six are now undergoing treatment.
Contacted, officer-in-charge of Adabar Police Station Mahbubur Rahman told the Daily Sun that they arrested Kalu in this regard.
