Bangladesh-India train fares hiked

Bangladesh Railway has decided to increase fares of three passenger trains running between Bangladesh and India.
The seat fare is going to increase by up to Tk315, and the berth fare will rise by a maximum of Tk455. The new fares will be effective from 15 June.

The fares of Maitree Express, Bandhan Express and Mitali Express trains are being adjusted in line with the increase in dollar value, according to a letter from Mihrabur Rashid Khan, deputy director (Interchange) of Bangladesh Railway.

Maitree Express was launched on 14 April 2008 on the Dhaka-Kolkata route. The train’s AC seat fare has been increased to Tk5,110, which is currently Tk4,795. The rent for its AC chair has increased to Tk3,740 from the current rent of Tk3,530.

Bandhan Express started its journey on 16 November 2017 as a symbol of friendship between Bangladesh and India. This train is running on the Khulna-Kolkata route. The train’s AC seat fare has been increased from Tk2,900 to Tk3,055 and AC chair fare has been increased from Tk2,265 to Tk2,370.

On 26 March 2021, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mitali Express on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The length of this railway is 530 km. Of this, 84 km is in India, and 446 km in Bangladesh.

The AC chair fare for this route has been increased to Tk4,015, from the existing rate of Tk3,785. The AC seat fare on the Mitali Express has been hiked to Tk4,520, from Tk4,175. The AC berth fare on it has been raised to Tk7,025 from Tk6,570.
There is a 50% discount for children aged one to five years on all the trains. The children’s age will be determined according to the passport.
