A total of 37.67% of the total voters have exercised their franchise in the second phase of the sixth upazila (UZ) parishad elections held in 156 upazilas on Tuesday.
The voter turnout was 36.9% in the polls held through Electronic Voting machines (EVMs), Election Commission Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath told reporters on Wednesday.
EVMs were used in 24 upazilas and ballot papers in 132 upazilas during the polls.

Panchori upazila of Khagrachori witnessed the highest – 74.95% – voter turnout, while Baghmara upazila in Rajshahi witnessed the lowest – 17.98% – during the elections on Wednesday.
Earlier, 36.1% of the total voters exercised their franchise in the first phase of the sixth Upazila Parishad Election held on 8 May.
The local government elections usually create a huge buzz among the local people, and a large number of voter turnout was seen in the previous years.

The voter turnout was 41% in the fifth Upazila Parishad Election in 2019, 61% in the fourth in 2014 and 67% in the third in 2009.
The Election Commission is holding polls in 476 upazilas out of 495 across the country in four phases.
This year, the Awami League did not give party nominations or symbols in the upazila elections in order to make the election competitive. As a result, there is no boat candidate in this election, and although most of the candidates are Awami League leaders, they are contesting the polls as independents. The BNP has boycotted the election.
