Three construction workers died and another was injured after they fell from scaffolding while working in an under-construction building in the capital’s Basabo area on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Altaf Hossain, 40, Antar, 25 and Mofizul Islam, 20, said Anwar Hossain, sub-inspector (SI) of Sabujbagh Police Station.
Relatives and colleagues said hailing from Charpara village in Jamalpur sadar upazila, Mofizul, son of Rabbani, used to live in Sabujbagh area while Altafur is from Jamalpur while Antar is from Mymensingh.
Mofizul’s uncle Mizanur Rahman said he (Mofizul) worked as a mason's assistant at an 11-storey building in Mayakanan Area.
“They were working standing on a scaffold on the tenth floor of the building at around 10am. They fell when the rope of the scaffold snapped, leaving the three critically injured,” he said.
They were rushed to Mugda Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Altaf and Antar dead.
Later, Mofizul was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctor declared him dead.
Praloy Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge of Sabujbagh Police Station, said, “A case is being filed against contractor and owner of the building for negligence in ensuring safety of workers.”
